How do students find the
right career? How do Universities select suitable
candidates for their courses? How do employers select
a suitable candidate for their vacancy? What skills
really matter in a competitive job market? What
can young people do now to help develop their career?
Work is not just a job, it is what
you do with your life. It is therefore so important
to learn how to seek out the opportunities and make
the choices that are going to help you develop your
career in the direction that you choose. Taking
active steps towards developing a career path early
is a vital element in the process. So is developing
the people skills that will impress at an interview
and make you a successful influencer in the workplace.
Mentoring Direct offers a range of
services that can be valuable whether you are just
leaving school, graduating from university or looking
for a change in career.
While young people are gaining valuable
skills and experience, what they may not be able
to do on their own is to identify the 'soft skills'
they have acquired, and understand how to present
these when it comes to application forms and interviews.
Key modules can form a one day course or a series
of seminars:
Knowledge is power: Deciding
on the perfect job, researching companies and jobs
and how to set up a network.
Communication Skills: Use of the telephone
and telephone techniques, letter writing and preparing
for meetings and interviews.
Recruitment Processes: Applications, aptitude
tests and the different types, assessment centres
and interview techniques.
Understanding what the employer wants: Learning
how to identify relevant skills and experience and
turn them to advantage.
Other material can be incorporated
to create bespoke programmes:
'Making Assessments Not Assumptions'
The session is run to give the delegates experience
of the look and feel of a typical graduate assessment
centre. It has two or three practical exercises,
but does not include aptitude testing.
'Could You Secure Your Perfect Job
In Thirty Seconds?' Looks at how to succeed in interviews,
focusing on the purpose of an interview and the
importance of appearance and positive body language.
'It Is Not What You Say, But How
You Say It' Focuses on the verbal skills of interviewing.
How to respond positively to questions, how to ask
questions of your own, get your experience across
by making connections and how to turn a difficult
question to your advantage. This is very interactive
and works with small groups of up to six delegates.
